About Us

It all started with a canoe

The story of Wet-seal begins with an unconventional start – a canoe trip in the late 1970s.

During this adventure, one of Wet-seal’s future founders was introduced to a local from Coffs Harbour who was looking to step away from his canoe-building business. This opportunity was seized, marking the modest beginnings of what would later evolve into a significant operation initially dabbling in water tanks, rally car parts, and eventually making its mark in the construction industry with fibreglass shower trays in 1984.

The transformative moment for Wet-seal arrived when they were challenged to innovate beyond the conventional square shower mouldings. This led to their first on-site waterproofing project, laying the foundation for Wet-seal’s future.

From crafting canoes to pioneering in the construction sector, Wet-seal’s growth was propelled by the vision and expertise of its founding directors – Mike Ellis, Kevin Tighe, John Rathbone, and later Jim Child. Recognizing the potential to scale through a franchise model in 2000, Wet-seal expanded its footprint, driven by a unique waterproofing system that saw demand soar across Australia.

Guided by a blend of backgrounds in engineering, finance, plumbing, and manufacturing, the leadership team transformed Wet-seal into a multinational entity, extending its services from Coffs Harbour to across Australia and New Zealand. Today, they continue to steer the company forward, contributing decades of collective wisdom to its ongoing prosperity.

More

Wet-seal’s journey has been marked by some major milestones, including contributing to the creation of the Australian Waterproofing Code developed by the Board of Standards, and expanding into New Zealand and becoming the first company to achieve a nationally recognised waterproofing classification through BRANZ.

Wet-seal has also been recognised in BRW magazine’s 50 fastest growing franchises for four consecutive years; the only regionally-operated organisation to achieve this accolade.

In the 2010s, Wet-seal introduced the Enviro-coat range, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly solutions.

Wet-seal’s narrative, from its serendipitous beginnings to its status as an industry frontrunner, is a testament to innovation, adaptability, and the enduring vision of its founders.
